Abstract
This study aims to determine whether there is any significant correlation between 5W+1H mastery and news text writing skills at the eighth grade students of Swasta Tiga Bukit Kec.Barus. This study used quantitative methods by applying correlational approach. The population of this study is all the eight grade students of Swasta Tiga Bukit Kec. Barus, totaling 26 students and they were taken by using total sample technique. Research instruments used tests in multiple choice and performance. Descriptive analysis showed the average of students’ mastery of 5W+1H is 8.00 (very good) and the average of students’ skills in writing news texts is 84.57 (very good). Furthermore, inferential statistics (r product moment) showed r-calculated is more than r-table (0.591> 0.404) at a 90% confidence level. It means there is any significant correlation between 5W+1H mastery and students’ writing skills of news text at the eighth grade students of SMP Swasta Tiga Bukit Kec.Barus
